Kartschoke’s Magic in the Mediterranean ~ Day 5 La Spezia/Pisa

August 15th 2011 – Mostly Sunny High of 82
To help with some of our jet lag we slept in, although Paul got up and ran on the tread-mill this morning. We again went to topsiders buffet for breakfast and then went and played some games on the ship since our tour of the day was in the afternoon.

Next it was time for swimming and some lunch before getting on the tender boat to take us into La Spezia.

From La Spezia we took a bus to Pisa. Along the way we saw some local mountains that looked to have snow on it but our guide told us that the white was where they quarried for marble.

When we arrived in Pisa we once again took a train/trolley to tour around Pisa. We went in a circle around the square with the tower, church, and basilica. A long time ago the sea used to be close to Pisa  and the ground was sandy so, when they were building the tower it started sinking in to the soil. They dropped us off at the meeting point for the tour and we went down the road and turned the corner and…  BA-BAM! There was the leaning tower of Pisa. As Michele put it “whoa it’s right there”.

Then of course we had to do the necessary thing:
hold up the tower.

The area around the leaning tower was a bit run down and didn’t look very appealing but the actual area within the walls of the church, even though very touristy, was very nice.  Since it was a sunny hot day we needed to get some real Italian gelato, yummy. We had nutella, caramel, & amaretto/chocolate flavors.

We even had some pizza when we were here (sadly it didn’t taste much different than regular pizza)

They even had a statue about Romulus and Remus, but this is kinda a teaser for tomorrow's events (hint Rome).DSC01129

After this very nice tour where they even gave us all water bottles on the bus ride back, much better than the previous days tour, we took the Tender boat back to the ship and although a little late for dinner we made it to Lumierres. Tonight was a French theme and Paul had to get escargot. Alexa even tried one and liked it.  After dinner we played a little shuffleboard before heading to tonight's show call Villains Tonight.  This show allows some of the villains from the classic Disney movies to have a show and the show specialized in having a ton of jokes, even some very recent topics like Justin Bieber and Sarah Palins Alaska show.
